Detailed Setup of Marvin     Print

Here is a step by step tutorial that you can follow when you configure the Marvin processes. In order to access all of these features, you need to be in advanced mode. You may enter advanced mode by clicking the link on the navigation bar marked "Advanced". Please read the documentation to understand how Marvin works and what each of the processes can do before you continue.

A. Login

  1. Click on First Time User and enter in your e-mail address. You will then receive an e-mail with your password.
  2. To sign in, enter your e-mail address and password.
  3. Hit the Login Button.
  4. You will now see a page with different options. Read through them and then continue through the tutorial in the order presented here.
  5. Go to the Change Password option and change your password.
  6. Log out and then log back in to confirm that the new password has been set.

B. Anti-Virus

  1. Click the Virus link.
  2. Read the Virus introduction and Limitation of Liability.
  3. To activate the Virus protection, click the Enable button.
  4. If you ever want to turn this off, come back here and click the disable button.
  5. Click the Main Menu link to return to the Main Menu.

C. Whitelist

  1. Click the Whitelist link.
  2. Read the Whitelist introduction and read information about each of the fields by clicking on the links.
  3. If you have some friends or family that you want to add to the whitelist, type in their e-mail address (grandma@yahoo.com for example) into the From field and hit the Add Rule button. Continue to add as many e-mail addresses you want to the whitelist and hit the Add Rule after each one. You should see them get added to the list above under the From heading.
  4. If you receive mail from your work, you will want to add their domain name into the Domain field. If you worked for Sihope, you would enter in sihope.com (notice that there is no www). Then hit the Add Rule button. You can add as many domains as you want and they will appear in the list above under the Domain heading.
  5. If you're interested in "Working from home and making lots of money" and you want to receive anything that may deal with that, you could enter in some keywords into the Subject field that would allow them to pass. For instance, you could enter the word "money" and hit Add Rule and then enter in "work from home" in the Subject field and hit Add Rule. Then any e-mail sent to you that contains the word "money" and/or "work from home" will be delivered to your mailbox.
  6. To guarantee that you receive the Marvin Report, follow these instructions:
    1. Enter in the Subject Field: Marvin Rejected Message Report for
    2. Click the Add Rule button
    3. The new rule should show up when the page refreshed
  7. To remove anything you added, just click on the Delete button next to the one you want to remove.
  8. Now click the Main Menu link to return to the Main Menu and go onto the next process.

D. Blacklist

  1. Click the Blacklist link.
  2. Read the Blacklist introduction and read information about each of the fields by clicking on the links.
  3. If you have some mortal enemies or mother-in-laws, you may want to block their e-mail from arriving in your mailbox. Type in any e-mail address you want to block out of your mailbox into the From field and then hit the Add Rule button. Continue to add as many e-mail addresses you want and hit the Add Rule button after entering each one. You should see them added to the list above under the From heading. Remember though that you will not get any mail sent from that address.
  4. If you continually receive "special" offers from megatoystore.com and you are sick of them, you can block all mail from that domain (megatoystore.com). Just enter in the Domain field the domain name you want to block (for example, megatoystore.com) and click the Add Rule button. You can block as many domains as you like, just add the domain and hit Add Rule. The domains you block will show up under the Domain heading.
  5. If you want to stop adult (porn) e-mails from arriving to your or your children's mailbox, you can specify terms that appear in the subject that will cause the message to be rejected. If you want to block all messages that contain the words "sex" and/or "barely legal", just type "sex" into the Subject field and hit Add Rule. Both terms are added to the Subject heading and any messages that contain the word "sex" or phrase "barely legal" will be denied from arriving to your mailbox.
  6. To remove anything you added, just click on the Delete button next to the one you want to remove.
  7. Click the Main Menu link to return to the Main Menu and go to the next process.

E. DCC

  1. Click on the link that says DCC.
  2. Read the DCC introduction.
  3. To turn on DCC, click the radio button that says "DCC checking on".
  4. There are three fields listed titled Body, Fuzzy 1 and Fuzzy 2. This is to compare the fingerprint of the e-mail in question against DCC servers. People report spam to the DCC servers and the amount you enter into these fields is to match how many people have seen this message. You can specify a whole number or the terms Many or Never to be entered into these fields.
  5. If you enter in Many in all three fields, that means many (millions) of people have seen this message.
  6. If you enter in Never in all three fields, that means never use a particular fingerprint in comparing the e-mail messages.
  7. Sihope suggests entering in Many for all three fields.
  8. Click the Update button.
  9. Click the Main Menu link to return to the Main Menu and go to the next process.

F. SpamAssassin

  1. Click the SpamAssassin link.
  2. Read the SpamAssassin introduction to learn about what SpamAssassin does.
  3. You will now need to Set the minimum score. 5 is the default score. You can set
    it higher than 5. If you find SpamAssassin rejecting legitimate e-mail, increase
    the minimum score.
  4. Click Update.
  5. To select any of the rules listed, click on the check box to turn that rule on.
    When you have chosen all of the rules you want SpamAssassin to check against, click the update button.
  6. If you want all of the rules selected, click the Select All button and then click
    the update button. To deselect all the rules, click the Deselect All button and then
    click the update button.
  7. We recommend that you set the minimum score to 8, click on the Select All button
    and click the update button. Again, if you find SpamAssassin rejecting legitimate
    e-mail, increase the minimum score.
  8. Click the Main Menu link to return to the Main Menu and go to the next process.

G. Razor

  1. Click the link that says Razor.
  2. Read the Razor introduction to learn about Razor and what it is and does.
  3. Click the Enable button.
  4. If you ever want to turn this off, come back here and click the disable button.
  5. Click the Main Menu link to return to the Main Menu.

H. DNSBL

  1. Click the link that says DNSBL.
  2. Read the DNSBL introduction and read information about what the DNSBLs are and how they work. Click the link to read about some of the DNSBLs available.
  3. There are many DNSBLs to choose from and you can read a little about each one if information is available.
  4. To turn one on, click on the box to check it.
  5. To turn one off, click on the check to uncheck it.
  6. If you don't know which to select, we recommend you check:
    relays.visi.com
    relays.ordb.org
    relays.osirusoft.com
    sbl.spamhaus.org
    bl.spamcop.net
  7. Once you check the ones you want, click the Update button at the bottom of the page.
  8. Now click the Main Menu link to return to the Main Menu and continue to the next process.

I. Delay

  1. Click the link that says Delay.
  2. Read the Delay introduction to understand what the Delay is. Click on the Example link to see an example.
  3. Decide how many seconds you want your messages to wait before being processed again.
  4. Enter in the amount of seconds and click the update button.
  5. We suggest you enter in 1800 (30 minutes) for the best results.
  6. Click the Main Menu link to return to the Main Menu

 

Now all of the actual processes your mail can go through to catch spam is setup. If you ever want to make changes to these processes, return to the Main Menu and choose which process you want to change and make your changes. Use the instructions above if you need help again.

The next thing you will need to configure is your spam report. The spam report is an e-mail you will get listing all of the messages that were rejected based on the settings you entered for the processes. You need to enter in a time setting as to how often you would like to receive the spam report.

J. Report

  1. Click the link that says Report
  2. Read the Report introduction to understand what the Report is and how to set the time.
  3. Enter in the frequency you would like to receive the report. Note that this time is specified in seconds.
  4. We recommend you follow the next steps in setting up the frequency.
  5. For the first few days, set the time to 28800 (every 8 hours). Look through the reports to make sure everything looks fine.
  6. After a few days and things look good, change the number to 86400 (one a day) and review the reports for a few days.
  7. After another few days and all looks fine, change the number to 259200 (one every 3 days) and review the reports again.
  8. Finally, after a few days of watching again, change the number to 604800 (once a week) and you can keep it at that or bump it up even higher.
  9. Once you enter in the number of seconds, hit update and the changes will take effect.
  10. A report is sent to you when you hit the Update button. Each time you hit the Update button, you will receive a new report immediately.
  11. Click the Main Menu link to return to the Main Menu.

K. Retrieve

When you receive the spam report, look through it to make sure nothing is in there that doesn't belong. If you find a message or messages in the report that you want, log into Marvin and follow the steps below.

  1. Click on the Retrieve link.
  2. Read the introduction to learn about what the Retrieve section is and how it works.
  3. At the bottom of the page you will see a list of messages that will match the latest report you received in your e-mail.
  4. Find the message(s) you want and check the box under Recall.
  5. After you selected all of the messages you want, hit the Recall Selected Messages button at the bottom and the message(s) you selected will be delivered immediately without going through your anti-spam settings.
  6. If you find a message that is from someone you always want to receive mail from, check the box under Whitelist and hit the Recall Selected Messages button that is under the heading Recall Whitelist. This will add that e-mail address to your whitelist and you will get mail from that person right away from then on.

You have now gone through all of the features of Marvin. If you ever need to make changes to your settings, just log back into Marvin and choose the appropriate feature that you want to change.
